An instrumental produced by British producer and singer/songwriter Maths Time Joy, that evokes a sense of nostalgia through poignancy and introspection. In truth, the beat mostly over-powers the lyrics, and that is not a bad thing. It leaves room for the imagination, encouraging you to look back upon memories, whether good or bad.
Maths Time Joy produces a ballad type beat, rich with the sound of an electronic guitar that dances upon the riffs in a fashion that renders time itself suspended. It truly is a wonderful rendition of what genius can be produced within the walls of a studio. 808s thumping, and lack of syncopation forces you to look inward, before an eventual and explosive release that comes thundering toward a powerful climax by virtue of the vocals from DC born Gallant. It is cathartic.
The lyrics are one of deep regret, for the love he failed to give at a time when it was needed most. The notion of hindsight, and looking back in an appreciative sense of something now gone is more bitter than sweet for Gallant. This is where the passion behind Jupiter Grayscale is sourced, in heartache. Gallant conveys this well through reaching vocal ranges that only ever seem possible through both deep desire and incessant woe. Ultimately, there is no relief from this release but instead emptiness. ‘I’m sorry that I waited too long’, are Gallant’s final words of acceptance accompanied by a guitar solo that further the pain of such undesired rhetoric.
The lyrics itself are not what has drawn me to this song, but rather the energy of the beat and vocals combined that create a sound so cosmic, and unearthly. If anything, the irony of Jupiter and Grayscale in one sentence becomes more apparent as the song approaches, and passes its crest. Big man, this tune had my eyes closed attempting to comprehend its cathartic embodiment, and feel what the song wants you to feel. I hope it does the same for you too.
